Reaching Our Goals
Responding to pleas of Catholics the world over, Pope Benedict XVI in 2007 promulgated a charter for the restoration of the traditional Roman Rite of the Mass in the life of the Church. The Holy Father's apostolic letter Summorum Pontificum provides that "[i]n parishes where a group of the faithful attached to the previous liturgical tradition stably exists, the parish priest should willingly accede to their requests to celebrate Holy Mass according to the rite of the 1962 Missal" (Art. 5, s. 1), and further, that "[t]he local Ordinary, should he judge it opportune, may erect a personal parish in accordance with the norm of Canon 518 for celebrations according to the older form of the Roman rite" (Art. 10). (You can find the full text from Pope Benedict on our Resources page!)
We see four practical steps on the path to restoration for us here in the Hudson Valley: doing, learning, evangelizing, and committing.
Doing: The Latin Mass Society ("LMS") actively promotes and facilitates the celebration of the prayers and practices that nurtured the faith of Saints for centuries. These include first of all the Latin Mass; but also Vespers, Benediction and other traditional Catholic modes of prayer.
Learning: LMS will help facilitate the fruitful participation of the Catholic faithful in the traditional Roman Mass and Divine Office. To foster true active participation in the liturgy we will work to provide basic instruction in ecclesiastical Latin, Gregorian chant, and the Missal.
Evangelizing: Jesus' followers are known by their fruits. Since we believe that the traditional Latin Mass is the best school of holiness and discipleship, we aim to engage our neighbors and spread awareness among others about the beauty and sacredness of tradition that is key to the renewal of the Church.
Committing: To create stable communities of the faithful adhering to the traditional Roman Rite -- both in existing and newly created parishes -- we will need persons who are willing to commit themselves and their resources, whether in prayer, time, or finances.
